ECM/TCM/BCM/ABS Module Programming

Modern vehicles rely on a network of electronic control modules that communicate over CAN bus, LIN bus, and other protocols. The ECM manages the engine, the TCM controls transmission shifting, the BCM handles lights, locks, windows, and other body functions, and the ABS module manages anti-lock braking. When any of these modules fails and needs replacement, the new module arrives as a blank slate — it must be programmed with the vehicle's VIN, configured with the correct parameters for that specific year, make, and trim level, and initialized so it can communicate with all other modules on the network.

This type of programming is sometimes called "module setup and configuration" or "SPS (Service Programming System)" depending on the manufacturer. Ford calls it FDRS, GM uses TIS2Web/SPS, Chrysler/Stellantis uses wiTECH, and so on. Each requires specialized subscription access and hardware.
